The Impact of Coronavirus on Admissions to AUA

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

AUA’s Office of Admissions is receiving numerous inquiries from applicants concerning the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. We understand that many applicants have been adversely affected, leading to a great deal of anxiety. The American University of Armenia continues to monitor the situation and places the health and safety of our community first. The University has prepared answers to the most commonly posed questions. If you have a question not answered here, please email us at the contacts listed below. At this time, the changes listed below will only affect applicants applying for the Fall 2020 (Summer 2020 for MSM) cycle.

1. How is AUA responding to the Coronavirus outbreak?

The University, including the Office of Admissions, is closed starting March 16. We will reopen our doors when the Government of Armenia advises accordingly. Current students have had classes transitioned to an e-learning, online format. Please see the University’s Coronavirus Health Alert for more information.

2. Is AUA open for visitors?

Unfortunately, no. Effective March 16, the Office of Admissions has temporarily suspended all recruitment events, information sessions, open classes, campus visits and in-person admissions counseling sessions. While we regret that we cannot welcome prospective students and their families to campus, we feel this closure is necessary to ensure the health and safety of our community.

In the meantime, we recommend you view our 360 degree tour. If you are an applicant with questions about the application process, we can set up individual consultations online or you can email your inquiries to the contacts above.

3. Has AUA changed its admissions deadlines due to the Coronavirus outbreak?

The Coronavirus outbreak will not affect anyone who applied by the early admissions deadline. For applicants who plan to apply by the regular and rolling deadlines (including those deferred to these cycles), the following updates have been made to deadlines:

Undergraduate Application Deadlines: Application deadlines will remain as posted on our website: March 31, 2020 for Regular AdmissionsJune 15, 2020 for Rolling Admissions (pending space availability). Rolling applicants who submit complete applications will have their applications reviewed by the Undergraduate Admissions Committee in the order that they are received.

Graduate Application Deadlines: Application deadlines have been moved to April 30, 2020 for Regular Admissions and July 1, 2020 for Rolling Admissions (pending space availability and not available to MSM applicants).

Certificate Application Deadlines: Application deadlines have been moved to May 1, 2020 for Early Enrollment and July 1, 2020 for Regular Enrollment.

4. My entrance exams were cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Can I still apply?

Yes. Given the suspension of required entrance exams, AUA is offering alternatives to Fall 2020 applicants who were unable to take the required entrance exams. A quick note that the TOEFL iBTIELTS Academic, GRE, GMAT, and LSAT exams are offering special tests applicants can take from the convenience of their homes. If you prefer to take these exams, read question 5 below for more information. If not, AUA will provide the following alternatives (for Fall 2020 applicants only).

Undergraduate Exam Alternatives:

AUA Internal English Assessment: This internal assessment, for applicants unable to take the TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic, will test reading and writing skills, as well as ability to construct a well-reasoned argument, supported by evidence. The exam will be divided into three parts; the first a timed essay, the second an extended 15 minute admissions interview, and the third an on-the-spot 15 minute essay. You may be invited to Part 2 and 3 if your application passes the Undergraduate Admissions Committee’s initial review. The Office of Admissions will contact applicants directly to schedule this exam.

Math Proficiency - As part of AUA’s holistic admissions process, the Undergraduate Admissions Committee will review all available parts of your application. Applicants who ultimately were unable to take the SAT or ACT exams for Fall 2020 admissions may be invited to an extended admissions interview which will include a short assessment on their quantitative and mathematical aptitude.

Graduate
 and Certificate Exam Alternatives:

AUA Internal English Assessment: This internal assessment will be offered during an extended admissions interview during which applicants will be assessed on their speaking, listening, and written English language skills.

Graduate Standardized Exams: Given the current suspension of required entrance exams, AUA is waiving the GRE/GMAT and LSAT for all Fall 2020 applicants. However, please take note of the following.

  • Applicants* unable to take the GRE/GMAT exams should download and complete this form* detailing math and statistical concepts (for example measures of central tendencies, correlations, derivatives, etc.) covered in their previous education and attach it to their application. Note that you will be questioned about these concepts during your interview. Title this document “Math and Statistical Concepts”.
  • Applicants unable to take the LSAT should be ready to answer logical questions during your admissions interview.

* Only required from applicants to the Management, Business Administration, and Economics programs and Certificate in Finance and Data Analytics programs. This is NOT required from applicants to all remaining programs: Public Health, Computer and Information Science, Industrial Engineering and Systems Management, and Political Science and International Affairs.

6. I’m not able to fulfill all of my application requirements. Can I still apply?

The online application at im.aua.am is fully functional. We still expect that applicants submit their applications per the deadlines posted on our website. However, we understand that fulfilling all parts of the application process (required entrance exams, transcripts, diplomas) may be difficult at this time, so the Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions Committees will remain flexible and review delayed application materials on a case by case basis. For questions related to required admissions exams, please read the Q&A directly above.

7. When will AUA’s Office of Admissions re-open to the public?

Unfortunately, we do not have an answer to this question at this time. We are following the advice of Armenia’s Ministry of Health to contain the spread of the coronavirus. Once the Government establishes that it is safe for universities to operate, we will re-open our doors. Stay tuned to our Facebook page where we will post this and other important announcements.

8. Since AUA is currently closed, how can I submit my tuition assistance application?

Please submit your completed tuition assistance application via email to [email protected] per the established deadlines. Make sure that your application includes all required documents as listed in the tuition assistance application or checklist. However, if you are not able to obtain documents due to the Coronavirus pandemic (for example income statements, ACRA reports, etc.), not to worry, the Office of Financial Aid is flexible. They will accept those at a later date. For any additional questions, please email [email protected].
